Recent College Graduates

  1. Specify your career objective and/or specific to the type of job for which you are applying.
  2. List your school, degree year, and any honors, including your grade point average if it’s high.
  3. Consider listing additional coursework outside your major if applicable to the position for which you are applying.
  4. Take a fresh look at what you may think are menial jobs (i.e. previous positions in fast food restaurants, gas stations, etc.)
  5. Analyze your extra-curricular activities and think about how they might relate to a real-world job.
  6. Think about whether your coursework could be considered work experience.
  7. Use action verbs.
  8. Be specific in your descriptions and quantify with results wherever possible.
  9. Try a brainstorm of your work, schooling and other experiences.

Career Change

  1. Start your resume from scratch – New career, new format.
  2. Show off your knowledge of the new industry of choice
  3. Use a format that focuses on your transferable skills
  4. Think about potential work experience outside of your traditional employment, such as hobbies, voluteer work, lectures, conferences, etc.
  5. Keep your confidence high

Executive Level

  1. Examine your career introspectively – Make sure that you are in line with your target companies’ needs, and vice versa. 
  2. Create a business plan
  3. Focus on your greatest achievements
  4. Use charts, graphs, and relevant stories
